Her Reflections

The Her Reflection series is a work that I created in 2007. Raw, real….. like a snapshot or an oil painting with text, music and movement. A memory of women before, during and after slavery. The two stories below are about Phillis Wheatley and Harriet Tubman. The score & script is written and composed by me along with my writing partner, choreographer/director Maria Mitchell. Stage and tech is by BAYO, Performers are Marlene Rice, Judith Insell, Nioka Workman, Miriam Sullivan, Ghail Rhodes Benjamin, Afua Hall.

In this version of the Her Reflection series, iconic women, share a history of success, despite all of the  adversity and challenges thrown at them. Originally conceived as dance theater, the 2014 version was rewritten for a small stage. Barebones, stripped down, included are the stories of Madam CJ Walker and Josephine Baker for two actors and string quartet presented by the talented young director Marcus Dargan in BMC NYC black box theater.

We produced this event on a shoestring budget, very grateful for funding from the Canadian Council on the Arts, in kind donations, Ibeam, artists love and Matt Garrison for allowing us to use his beautiful space. Featuring Geraldine Eguiluz, Jay Rodriguez, Frank Lacey: conductor. Location: Shapeshifter, Brooklyn, NY 2013
